Enthronement (bersanding)……………is prohibited??

Wednesday 11 April 2012

In this era of science and technology, there is still a custom that always been practicing among Muslim Malays in this country. This custom was inherited since long ago. This kind of tradition is practiced during their wedding ceremony. It was practiced by all categories of people either rich, poor, those from city, from village, laymen as well as celebrities!

Many of them do not know the hukm of enthronement but merely practicing it to show off to others, to be a memorable celebration, to enjoy the one and only chance of getting married and to carry out their ascendants’ belief. Although it is a norm, Muslims cannot just follow it blindly. We, as Muslims have our own guidance that needs to be followed. We should know the hukm of enthronement before doing it.

Hukm enthronement is according to hukm ‘urf (custom). There are two types of ‘urf which are ‘urf sahih (permissible) and ‘urf fasid (forbidden). Enthronement is permitted when there are no illegal things or means involved during the commencement of the enthronement. Nevertheless, we need to be aware because enthronement can be prohibited in Islam!

Enthronement does not prohibited by itself but it becomes illegal according to syara’ because of unlawful elements that exist in it. For example, if the ‘aurat’ of the bride is seen by ajnabi (not a mahram) or if there is some sort of khurafat or syirik to Allah such as scaterring rice. It is forbidden also when the bride is using excessive make up or the ceremony is wasteful like high dowry or mahr.

As long as all those illegal ways are avoided, enthronement may be lawful and permissible in Islam. For instance, if the ceremony is commenced in front of the mahram of the bride only and if there is no element of extravagant.

As the conclusion, we are the one who should decide. We have choices in front of us. So, we can think by ourselves and make a right choice. Do remember! If we begin our marriage according to syariah, we will get blessing from Allah and insyaAllah the wedding will last forever. Ameen…
